On January 29th, 2018 Eastern Division 1st Vice President Jim Yates attended the Mercer County (New Jersey) Fire Chiefs Association Annual Dinner. On this occasion, Vice President Yates had the great honor to bestow the Eastern Division Valor Award to three Fire Chiefs.
Chief Shaun Dlabik, Chief Dan Tomalin, and Chief Mark Lenarski were recognized for their lifesaving efforts while attending a picnic at a friend’s home.
Shaun was made aware of a young child lying at the bottom of a swimming pool. Recognizing the child was not swimming, Shaun immediately alerted others at the party, dove into the pool and retrieved the unconscious and lifeless 8-year-old male.
As he surfaced with the child, he was met by Dan and Mark who quickly assessed the victim and found him to be unconscious and unresponsive with no pulse.
They immediately initiated CPR and rescue breathing efforts and were quickly joined by Shaun. In unison, they continued providing life-saving efforts. While others eventually came to their aid the ultimate lifesaving act was performed by these men.
If it were not for the professionalism, alertness and perseverance of Chief Dlabik, Chief Tomalin, and Chief Lenarski, this child would not have survived.
The heroic actions of these 3 chiefs exemplify the highest traditions of the Fire Service. Please join the Eastern Division in offering our congratulations.
