Chief James V. C. Yates is a 40 plus year fire service veteran who began as a volunteer with Lawrence Road Fire Company, in Lawrenceville, N.J., in 1970. He served in all line and administrative capacities including Fire Chief and President.
In 1974, he began his career service as a firefighter at Trenton Mercer Airport, Ewing, NJ. Other career firefighter positions included Naval
Air Station Lakehurst, Lawrence Township, NJ, and Fire Marshal at Fire District #2 Hamilton Township, Mercerville, N.J.
Recognizing the value of a new life safety technology, smoke detectors, in 1978 then Assistant Chief Yates persuaded management of a 1000 unit high density housing project to install the devices. To ensure public safety, numerous community education programs were conducted which required all residents to attend. Subsequent to the program Assistant Chief Yates won the prestigious NFPA Learn Not to Burn national fire prevention contest award.
A 1978 graduate of Mercer County College, with an Associate Degree in Fire Science, and the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officers Program (EFO), he is an Assistant Professor of Fire Science at his college alma mater.
In 1985, Chief Yates was hired by West Windsor Township and serves as Director/Chief/Fire Marshal of the Division of Fire & Emergency Services which includes twelve career and twenty per diem Firefighter/EMTs that staff an engine, ambulance and perform fire code plan review and enforcement, HazMat/confined space team response as well as, CERT Team management and training and emergency management in a combination career/volunteer system.
Chief Yates holds the designation of Chief Fire Officer (CFO) from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International and MIFireE from the Institution of Fire Engineers and is a member of a number of organizations, including; New Jersey Career Fire Chiefs Association, New Jersey Fire Chief Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, Eastern Division and National Fire Protection Association.
