On May 24, 2021 the Officers and Past Presidents presented South Bowers Vol. Fire Dept. Deputy Chief Mike Hignutt with the Eastern Division of IAFC Medal of Valor award. In 2020 then Asst Chief Hignutt and his cousin Timothy Smith (not in the fire service) saved 2 citizens with extremely dangerous saves in a river that the current flowing extremely fast. Asst Chief Hignutt heard the screams, grabbed his radio and called the emergency operation center about what he heard and saw and entered the water. After getting the 2 citizens to shore he assumed South Bowers Command and the search was on for the 2 young men that were feared lost in the current. After 11 hours of searching with rescue divers and dragging operations the 2 young men were found deceased. There were many rescue boats and divers searching but because of the extremely fast current both divers and drag hooks couldn’t get to the bottom. Without the heroic actions of Asst Chief Hignutt and his cousin the outcome would have been worse.
The Eastern Division would like to thank our sponsors of our Valor Awards, Delaware State Fire Chief’s, Pres. Steve Deery, Atlantic Emergency Solutions, Chief Brian Bashista and Provident Insurance, VP CJ Bens.
